Greipel to lead HTC-Columbia in Giro d'Italia

Top sprinter Andre Greipel will lead HTC-Columbia in the Giro d'Italia next month, looking to continue his Grand Tour successes. In last year's Vuelta a España, the German won four stages and took the points competition. The US-based team also features Italian time trial champion Marco Pinotti, who this week won the prologue of the Tour de Romandie. Andre Greipel has announced he intends to leave HTC-Columbia the end of the season, to finally step out of the shadow of teammate and rival sprinter Mark Cavendish. “Next year I will ride in a team where I can realise my ambitions,” he told the latest issue of German magazine Sport-Bild . It appears that HTC-Columbia is one of several American ProTour squad prioritising next month's Amgen Tour of California over the traditional focus of May, the Giro d'Italia. Bob Stapleton's team is one of several American ProTour outfits sending its big guns to the Californian event, which has changed calendar slots for 2010, moving from February to May and now clashing with the first grand tour of the year. American ProTour teams HTC-Columbia and Garmin-Transitions are sending strong teams to Paris-Roubaix, with both Gent-Wevelgem winner Bernhard Eisel and Scheldeprijs winner Tyler Farrar riding in the “Hell of the North”. Eisel will be supported by seven Paris-Roubaix veterans, plus race rookie Adam Hansen. HTC-Columbia women's team depart the US after a successful California campaign, well prepared to take on a series of UCI World Cup events in Europe, beginning with the women's Tour of Flanders on April 4 in Belgium. With two days to go until Gent-Wevelgem, HTC-Columbia’s squad spent Friday morning out on a short recovery ride. The American team will skip E3 Prijs Vlaanderen on Saturday and will instead ride reconnaissance over Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem course.   Tristan Hoffman will be the team’s director sportif in the race, as they aim to defend their title in a race won by the new departed Edvald Boasson Hagen. HTC-Columbia's Andre Greipel and Tony Martin have described the frustration of the opening days of Paris-Nice, which have seen both riders involved in crashes and miss out on hoped-for stage wins. HTC-Columbia hasn’t given up on Mark Cavendish winning a second Milan-Sanremo title. Bernhard Eisel believes that despite losing several big name riders, HTC-Columbia could still spring surprises in Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne this weekend. With her first overseas race as a professional at HTC-Columbia done and dusted, Australia's Chloe Hosking is looking forward to a year of learning with the American squad. HTC-Columbia is looking to make Italian time trial specialist Marco Pinotti the first Tour of Oman winner next week, according to sport director Valerio Piva. Tejay Van Garderen (HTC-Columbia) enjoyed his professional debut on Sunday's stage one of the Challenge Mallorca, in Spain. The women's professional season gets underway on Wednesday with the Ladies Tour of Qatar, a three-day sprinter's race on the  Arabian peninsula.
